November Meeting - Recap
Since PixelWit took the liberty of posting the links we discussed during the meeting, I'm going to gladly just link to them and make my life a little less hectic. Thanks Sean! :-)
Hope everyone has a great holiday season and we'll see you in January for the next meeting where there will be a tour of The Patriot-News printing press. Check back on the blog for specifics.
Meet Adobe Groups
Adobe Groups gives the Adobe community a place to connect, find one another, and locate communities of people who share their interests—whether in their own back yard or worldwide. It is a common home for Adobe user groups, containing information about those groups, their areas of focus, and past and future meetings.
Adobe Groups provides a forum of support and technology to the community at all levels. Whether your professional focus is design or development or you're a hobbyist looking to gain experience, or you are just starting out, Adobe Groups can help you strengthen community ties, build your network, learn the latest technology innovations, and see the techniques that turn novices into experts—and experts into gurus.
Nearly all of the content on Adobe Groups is created or curated not by Adobe staff but by the user group managers themselves. Adobe user groups are run by community members like you. They are professionals who live and work all over the world, love Adobe products, and make time in their lives to share their passion and expertise with others in their area. They are a tremendous resource to the Adobe community, building connections and fostering learning face to face. We've built Adobe Groups in large part to help them do their work better and more easily.
Adobe Groups is currently organized by region, so no matter where you are in the world, you can quickly and easily find what's closest to your home, office, or school. And if there are no user groups listed in your local area, you can find out how to start a brand-new user group.

The Ioke JVM Language: The power of Lisp and Ruby with an intuitive syntax
Ola Bini, a core JRuby developer and author of the book Practical JRuby on Rails Projects, has been developing a new language for the JVM called Ioke. This strongly typed, extremely dynamic, prototype based object oriented language aims to give developers the same kind of power they get with Lisp and Ruby, combined with a nice, small, regular syntax.
Ola explains the basic nature of Ioke:

My 1st experience with LiveCycle Designer
I was pleasantly surprised when I found the Forms section of Acrobat would take me to LiveCycle Designer to do exactly what I need! I found that I could design a layout in Illustrator, (don't have InDesign at work), save it as a PDF and open it with Acrobat. Once open in Acrobat, just go under Forms, Create New and you can than select "Start with an existing document". This allows you convert an existing file into an interactive form (which is clearly labeled). From there you will go through a few prompts and it opens LiveCycle Designer. Once inside Livecycle Designer then you can manipulate the form to whatever you might need. I only needed 6 text fields, with multiple design styles to lay over my background design. The help files made it extremely easy to figure out how to add the style and control to each text field. Then you just save it as whatever PDF Version you like, and it is ready to go. It is completely interactive in acrobat reader, just point, click and type. Perfect for the reluctant computer user who doesn't even like to check their email. So in a relatively short amount of time I was able to create what I needed and learned a good bit about what LiveCycle Designer is capable of. Overall I was impressed. So if you ever get a chance check it out.

Alert: Incorrect Version of CS4 Master Collection (Win only)
Dear Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection customer,
We have discovered an issue that affects a recent purchase you made from
the Adobe Online Store. Unfortunately, we inadvertently posted a nearly
final version of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection for Windows,
rather than the final version, for purchase and download. We wanted to
alert you to the problem and let you know how to fix it. We appreciate
your recent purchase of CS4 Master Collection and apologize deeply for
the inconvenience this issue may cause you.
BACKGROUND
If you purchased and downloaded CS4 Master Collection for Windows from
the Adobe Online Store between 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Tuesday,
October 14 and 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Thursday, October 16, you
received an older version of the software and not the final version. No
other versions of CS4 Master Collection—whether available in
shrink-wrapped retail boxes or on volume licensing media sets—were
affected. We have now removed the incorrect version from the Adobe Store
and replaced it with the correct final version of CS4 Master Collection
for Windows.
HOW TO CORRECT THE ISSUE
Nearly final versions of software are not intended for production
workflows. We strongly recommend that you replace the build you
previously downloaded as soon as possible. Here are the steps to to
take:
If you have downloaded the software without installing it, please delete
the files from your system. You will then be able to download the
corrected version to replace it.
If you have already installed Creative Suite 4 Master Collection, you
must uninstall the software. Otherwise, when you download and install
the final version, you will see an error message and the installation
will stop.
To uninstall the software, do the following:
On Windows XP, open the Windows Control Panel and double-click Add or
Remove Programs. Select the product that you want to uninstall, click
Change/Remove, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
On Windows Vista, open the Windows Control Panel and double-click
Programs and Features. Select the product that you want to uninstall,
click Uninstall/Change, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Then download the updated version of CS4 Master Collection: Go to the
Adobe Store in your region, click Your Purchases, click Your Downloads,
log in with your Adobe ID and password, and then initiate a new
download.
If you prefer not to download the software again, we would be happy to
send you a complimentary DVD set for CS4 Master Collection for Windows.
Please contact Adobe Customer Service to place your request:
In North America, call Adobe Customer Service at 800-833-6687.
In other regions, locate the Adobe Customer Service number for your
region at www.adobe.com/support/contact.
We regret any inconvenience or confusion this issue may cause you. We
appreciate your purchase of CS4 Master Collection for Windows and want
you to have a productive and satisfying experience using the software.
Please accept our sincerest apology.
Sincerely,
The Adobe Online Store Team

You know you're a web designer...

About Adobe Flex 3:
Flex is a highly productive, free open source framework for building and maintaining expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops, and operating systems. More about Flex 3 at www.adobe.com/products/flex
How To Architect Flex Applications:
When building Flex applications the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You may know how to work with the pieces of Flex (layout, styling components, data components, etc.) but it's still rather easy to get tangled up and frustrated when trying to stitch the piece together into a coherent application. In this presentation we'll look at strategies you can use to build Flex applications in the best way possible. Rather than presenting one boiler plate solution as the "right way" this presentation looks at the bigger picture and common patterns you can employ.
Help promote the event and make it a huge success!

About the Meeting:
Color Management in Photoshop presented by Terry Finegan
Learn how to make sure the great color you see, the rest of the world will be able to see the same way. Calibrating your monitor and software to a standard that produces repeatable and predictable color fidelity. Using system software and/or hardware to match your monitor to output, whether print or web.
Terry Finegan has a background in photography, newspaper pre-press and graphics.
THE FOLLOWING PRESENTATION HAS BEEN CANCELED:
Enhancing your images with Photoshop presented by Tim Rose
Want to swtich from a Mac to PC or vice-versa?
A. Yes. Just call Adobe Customer Service 800-833-6687 in the US for assistance. The process, as I understand it, involves signing an agreement stating that you've destroyed the product on one platform, and in return Adobe will send you the product for the other platform. According to the service folks, there may be a cost involved; verification of product is required; and restrictions apply.

Adobe strategy: Mobile app meets Photoshop Elements, Express updates
In late September, Adobe will update both Adobe's Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements with version 7, rebrand Photoshop Express as Photoshop.com, and debut a mobile Photoshop (of sorts) for Windows Mobile.
Syncing with the new Photoshop.com
Whereas Photoshop Express (review) began life as an experimental, Web-based offshoot of the Photoshop brand, Adobe's new strategy to automatically sync photos from desktop to Web to phone and back again now gives Photoshop Express a starring role on the Photoshop playbill, albeit using a different alias. Don't let that fool you--although the product will now be Photoshop.com, it will retain its editing features and the ability to post photos to Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, and Picasa. The bigger difference is that the new Photoshop.com will sync with the two Photoshop Elements applications and the new mobile software.

Flash Den
At our last meeting we talked a little about Flash Den and not many of us had used it. So last week I checked it out. I signed up and paid the $20 dollars base fee. When registering, you have the option of buying or selling or both. I chose both, although I knew I wouldn't being selling anything right away, it is nice to have that option for the future. Overall I was quite pleased with how easy it was to sign up and navigate the site. I eventually found a piece worth buying and that process was easy also. The rates seemed fair and they had a lot of reviews which also helped. Once you are a member you can comment and rate all of the items available to purchase. These comments come in handy because many of them are other members that have already purchased the file and have questions on how to customize it to their liking. The seller of the file I purchased seemed quite accommodating. He/She offered a lot of useful tips and answered buyer questions. After awhile the seller did stop responding. My assumption is that after a certain period of time the seller moved on to other projects, or just didn't feel like responding anymore. So there is a risk of encountering a problem with a file and the seller not responding. Luckily, the tips and previous buyers questions answered any question I would have had. I do feel as if I did have a question, there was a chance it would go unanswered. Even with that said, I thought Flash Den has a definitely worth checking out and could even be a good place to make a couple of bucks!
