Jim Almeida will demonstrate APE (Actionscript Physics Engine) for Flash.
APE is a free AS3 open source 2D physics engine for use in Flash and Flex, released under the MIT License. APE is written and maintained by Alec Cove. Jim has been using Flash since it was “Future Splash” and essentially lives and breathes Flash :-)

The Ioke JVM Language: The power of Lisp and Ruby with an intuitive syntax
I am not sure who may be into this but I found it interesting.
Ola Bini, a core JRuby developer and author of the book Practical JRuby on Rails Projects, has been developing a new language for the JVM called Ioke. This strongly typed, extremely dynamic, prototype based object oriented language aims to give developers the same kind of power they get with Lisp and Ruby, combined with a nice, small, regular syntax.

My 1st experience with LiveCycle Designer
I was introduced to the world of LiveCycle Designer for the first time last week. I needed to design an interactive form template that a non-computer savvy person could use, but still had a professional layout design. This being my first go, I googled it.
I was pleasantly surprised when I found the Forms section of Acrobat would take me to LiveCycle Designer to do exactly what I need! I found that I could design a layout in Illustrator, (don't have InDesign at work), save it as a PDF and open it with Acrobat. Once open in Acrobat, just go under Forms, Create New and you can than select "Start with an existing document". This allows you convert an existing file into an interactive form (which is clearly labeled). From there you will go through a few prompts and it opens LiveCycle Designer. Once inside Livecycle Designer then you can manipulate the form to whatever you might need. I only needed 6 text fields, with multiple design styles to lay over my background design. The help files made it extremely easy to figure out how to add the style and control to each text field. Then you just save it as whatever PDF Version you like, and it is ready to go. It is completely interactive in acrobat reader, just point, click and type. Perfect for the reluctant computer user who doesn't even like to check their email. So in a relatively short amount of time I was able to create what I needed and learned a good bit about what LiveCycle Designer is capable of. Overall I was impressed. So if you ever get a chance check it out.

Recap: CPOSC 2008 (Central PA Open Source Conference)
I had the good fortune of attending the CPOSC 2008 (Central PA Open Source Conference) this past Sunday in Harrisburg, PA. This is their first year and they did a great job with the organization of everything and especially of garnering well-qualified speakers. Tickets were a bargin at $29 each and included breakfast, lunch and a snack too.
There were a lot of presentations to choose from but I attended the following:
I really felt like I picked up a lot of great information...and it didn't hurt that the food was good (and plentiful - Thanks Anteil) and I even won a door prize! If you can attend next year, I'd highly recommend it. It's great day for learning, networking and supporting the Open Source Community.

Contest to award $100,000 to one tech biz in PA Counties
A state-funded economic development entity will award $100,000 to help a technology-oriented company grow in this region.
The award is a four-fold increase in prize money from previous Big Idea Business Plan contests held by Ben Franklin Venture Investment Forum and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA.
Interested entrepreneurs can go to http://www.cnp.benfranklin.org/vif/100k for rules, entry forms and information. Dec. 17 is the deadline to apply.
To qualify, entrepreneurs must have a marketable business idea, less than $500,000 in sales year to date for 2008 and less than $500,000 for all of 2007. The company must have fewer than 50 employees and have not received previous Ben Franklin Technology Partnership funding.
Preferred industry sectors include, but are not limited to, nanotechnology, green technologies, alternative energy, advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, medical devices, information technology and software.

If you live in Dauphin County PA and you have some electronics (and more) you'd like to recycle, be sure to drop the items off this Saturday, October 4th from 9AM - 1PM at HACC .
The event allows county residents to safely dispose of unwanted electronic devices at no cost, including TVs and computers.

Bulky items such as stoves, washers and dryers will cost $25 each. Refrigerators, from which the freon has been removed, will cost $35, and household freezers, $45.
Passenger vehicle tires that have been removed from the rims and are clean will be accepted free with a limit of 10 per household. Identification will be required for tire disposal.
Some large tires will be accepted for a fee.
Wearable clothing, useable household items and toys will also be accepted for recycling.

Flash Seems To Be Coming To The iPhone. But Is That A Good Thing?
Today at the Flash On The Beach (FOTB) conference, Adobe has confirmed that such an application is in development (it had previously been speculated to exist, but there was no official word from either company). Adobe Sr. Director of Engineering Paul Betlem made the announcement, stating “My team is working on Flash on the iPhone, but it’s a closed platform.”

Part of the Flash Media Server family, the new Flash Media Encoding Server (FMES) will allow you to do the following:
- Take your catalog of archived materials and convert them easily into Flash compatible formats
- Integrate the server into your production workflow by offloading the encoding process from your editors' machines to a dedicated server
- Ingest user-generated content from a variety of formats and prepare it to stream through Flash Player
- Encode high-quality video files into multiple bitrates to accommodate changing network conditions

Adobe strategy: Mobile app meets Photoshop Elements, Express updates
Adobe Systems on Monday let loose its plan to reinvent its image-editing software: the convergence of desktop, Webware, and mobile photo applications.
In late September, Adobe will update both Adobe's Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements with version 7, rebrand Photoshop Express as Photoshop.com, and debut a mobile Photoshop (of sorts) for Windows Mobile.
Syncing with the new Photoshop.com
Whereas Photoshop Express (review) began life as an experimental, Web-based offshoot of the Photoshop brand, Adobe's new strategy to automatically sync photos from desktop to Web to phone and back again now gives Photoshop Express a starring role on the Photoshop playbill, albeit using a different alias. Don't let that fool you--although the product will now be Photoshop.com, it will retain its editing features and the ability to post photos to Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, and Picasa. The bigger difference is that the new Photoshop.com will sync with the two Photoshop Elements applications and the new mobile software.

Flash Den
Hi everyone,
At our last meeting we talked a little about Flash Den and not many of us had used it. So last week I checked it out. I signed up and paid the $20 dollars base fee. When registering, you have the option of buying or selling or both. I chose both, although I knew I wouldn't being selling anything right away, it is nice to have that option for the future. Overall I was quite pleased with how easy it was to sign up and navigate the site. I eventually found a piece worth buying and that process was easy also. The rates seemed fair and they had a lot of reviews which also helped. Once you are a member you can comment and rate all of the items available to purchase. These comments come in handy because many of them are other members that have already purchased the file and have questions on how to customize it to their liking. The seller of the file I purchased seemed quite accommodating. He/She offered a lot of useful tips and answered buyer questions. After awhile the seller did stop responding. My assumption is that after a certain period of time the seller moved on to other projects, or just didn't feel like responding anymore. So there is a risk of encountering a problem with a file and the seller not responding. Luckily, the tips and previous buyers questions answered any question I would have had. I do feel as if I did have a question, there was a chance it would go unanswered. Even with that said, I thought Flash Den has a definitely worth checking out and could even be a good place to make a couple of bucks!

About the Event:
CPOSC, the Central PA Open Source Conference, is a one-day, multi-track, low-cost conference about all things open source: software, programming, operating systems, community and more. It will take place on Sunday, Oct 19th at the ITT Tech campus in Harrisburg, PA.
As members of various open source related organizations in the area (including CPLUG & CP.rb) we realized that there is a wealth of talent and knowledge just waiting for a venue in which it can be shared. So the idea of CPOSC was born. A time and place where people with a desire to gain knowledge and people with a desire to share knowledge can meet.
